Childhood injuries can be predictable and are preventable, but in San Diego County, these unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among young children ages 1-5 years.

Here are some ways you can keep your little ones safe this month and beyond:

  • Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle for any length of time. Even if the windows are rolled down or the car is parked in the shade, it does not cool off the interior temperature of the vehicle.
  • Install window guards or window stops in your home to ensure their windows do not open above a set height and be sure to move furniture away from windows.
  • Always supervise your child around water—stay focused, avoid distractions, and keep young children within arm’s reach.
  • Secure your home by covering electrical outlets, installing cabinet locks, and anchoring your furniture. Cover electrical outlets.
  • Keep cleaning products, hazardous materials, and sharp objects such as scissors or tools out of reach in cabinets or shelves.
