Drowning is silent and can happen in as little as 30 seconds.

With 70 miles of coastline, 20 freshwater lakes, and thousands of public permitted bodies of water in San Diego County, learning how to stay safe around water is an essential skill for parents, caregivers, and children to develop.

First 5 San Diego partnered with the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego for the SD Swim Safer campaign to share tips, resources, and essential information on the dangers of drowning and how to reduce them.

Active supervision is one of the most important ways to help prevent drowning. Stay focused, avoid distractions, and keep young children within arm’s reach whenever they are in or around water. A few moments of attention can make all the difference.

Learning to swim is a life-saving skill. Swim lessons help children build confidence, develop water competency, and learn important safety skills that can reduce the risk of drowning. It’s never too early or too late to learn.

Life jackets save lives when they are worn. Whether you’re boating, paddling, or enjoying time on the water, choose a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket. Wear it every ride. Every time.
