Stress can happen anywhere and to anyone—parents and children alike.

This Stress Awareness Month, our friends at American Academy of Pediatrics, California Chapter 3 (AAP-CA3) have shared their tools and resources for caregivers and their little ones.

Infants

Infants go through so much growth and development during their first year as they begin to learn about the world. Creating positive experiences can help children develop resilience and grow into healthy adults.

  • Comfort them when they cry
  • Talk to them and repeat the sounds they make
  • Cuddle and hold your bay often

Toddlers

Being a toddler or preschooler comes with both giggling and crying. When parents and caregivers create a safe, positive, and loving space for toddlers to explore all of their feelings, they are also helping them build a strong foundational relationship.

  • Read to your child every day
  • Establish routines for bedtime, bathtime, and meals
  • Play with your children often
  • Engage toddlers in family tasks
  • Make social connections
  • Allow them to feel their emotions

Parents

Parent stress can impact both the lives of parents and their children. Implementing stress relief strategies can foster a safe environment for children to grow.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Calm Toolbox provides a variety of strategies—such as breathing techniques, positive distractions, or moving your body—to regulate your nervous system.

Of course, if you are still struggling, reach out to your pediatrician to talk about other tools that may be helpful to help you manage your stress.
