9th Biennial Childhood Obesity Conference May 30-June 2
First 5 was proud to sponsor and host a booth at the 9th Biennial Childhood Obesity Conference. Presented by California Department of Public Health, California Department of Education, Nutrition Policy Institute UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, The California Endowment, and Kaiser Permanente, the Conference is the nation’s largest, most influential collaboration of professionals dedicated to combating pediatric obesity.
This year’s conference theme was, “Good Health for All: Addressing Equity where we Live, Learn, Work, and Play”. This theme invited conference participants to discuss issues of health equity, and work together towards creating equitable outcomes so that all children can attain their highest level of physical and mental health.
First 5 San Diego and Food 4 Less Team Up to Show Families How to Eat Healthy
First 5 San Diego was thrilled to celebrate national fruits and vegetables month with a healthy cooking event on June 21st at a local Food 4 Less grocery store. The event featured many different healthy cooking demonstrations for families looking to improve their children’s eating habits. Parents were able to learn a variety of new healthy kid-friendly recipes that their children would actually enjoy eating and some new tips and tricks to help spice up home-cooked meals with healthy alternatives.

Summer Movies in the Park
Families can enjoy free movies at parks throughout San Diego County through October.
First 5 San Diego is excited to once again sponsor Summer Movies in the Park. The series of free outdoor movie events is a collaborative effort between the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, the Cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Vista, along with USS Midway Museum, and the Port of San Diego. Each event provides opportunities to gather as a community and build sense of community and offers residents free opportunities to safely enjoy themselves outdoors in the summer evenings.
This year, the summer movie lineup features more than 100 flicks taking place at parks throughout the county.
The movie calendar includes newer features like “Finding Dory” (July 15 at the La Mesa Municipal Pool in La Mesa) and classics like “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (Aug. 11 at Otay Lakes County Park in Chula Vista). There will be numerous showings of “Moana” at parks throughout the county. To view the full listing, visit summermoviesinthepark.com.
The Summer Movies at the Park series runs through Oct. 28. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair, blankets and jackets. Arrive early to enjoy games and activities before the movie starts at dusk!
3rd Annual Early Education Fair
First 5 was happy to host a booth at the 3rd Annual Early Education Fair in Vista on Saturday, May 6th. The focused on community partnerships, getting resources to families, and encouraging enrollment in pre-school and Early Education programs, along with showcasing Vista USD’s elementary schools and other resources. There were mini-presentations on food & health, and tips for home & parenting, opportunities to talk to teachers and school leaders, as well as games and play for kids.
Miracle Babies 5K
Hosted by Miracle Babies, the Miracle Babies 5K on Sunday, May 7th featured the 5K walk, a Kids Zone/Carnival, and resource fair. The goal of the event is to help raise awareness of Miracle Babies, an organization whose mission is to provide support and financial assistance to families with critically ill newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; and to enhance the well-being of women, children and their families through education, prevention, and medical care. Money raised from the event goes to programs to support NICU families.
Rain or shine, First 5 staff can be found out in the community spreading information about out services as well as handing out some great resources and outreach materials!
