Since marijuana use has been legalized, accidental poisonings in children have increased, sometimes requiring visits to the emergency room or hospitalization.

First 5 San Diego has partnered with Rady Children’s Hospital to share ways parents and caregivers can safely store their edible cannabis products out of reach of little ones:

  1. Keep them out of sight: Treat cannabis products like you would medicine or cleaning supplies—keep them out of sight and reach of children.
  2. Remove temptation: Avoid edibles that look like candy or choose products with less enticing packaging. Alternatively, remove temptation completely by moving the product to non-descript, childproof packaging.
  3. Take precautions together: Have a conversation about safe storage and precautions with friends and family who consume marijuana edibles.

Most importantly: If your child has accidentally consumed a cannabis product, call local poison control right away and do not wait for symptoms. If you see serious side effects, call 9-1-1. Your quick response can keep your child out of the hospital.
