Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children under the age of 4.

This summer, make your home, pool and beach experience a safe one with these water safety tips from the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego:

Water Safety Tip #1: Supervise Constantly

Drowning is fast and silent and can happen in as little as 30 sections.

Kids need undivided attention near water. Leave distractions—like your phone—in your bag and stay within arm’s reach of younger kids. In a group? Name a “Water Watcher” and take shifts so there are always eyes on children in the water.

Water Safety Tip #2:  Learn to Swim

One of the best ways you can prevent drowning is by learning how to swim. By enrolling in swim lessons, you can learn simple skills like floating, treading water and self-rescue.

Find a location near you for lessons or fill out San Diego Swim Safer’s Swim Lessons Needed Information Form to get connected to swim lessons or clinics in your area.

Water Safety Tip #3: Wear a Life Jacket While Boating

Life jackets and floatation devices help weaker swimmers to stay afloat. Parents and caregivers can be an example of safety by wearing life jackets every time they boat.

Always wear a Coast Guard-approved jacket make sure to have plenty on hand for kids who need the extra help in the water. For more water safety tips and resources, head over to the San Diego Swim Safer website at: https://sdswimsafer.org/
