First 5 San Diego supports The Children’s Initiative’s Childhood Injury Prevention Program, which educates parents, caregivers and early childhood education staff about childhood injury prevention strategies to make homes, automobiles and communities safer for children ages 0 through 5.

Childhood injuries are preventable. Here are some ways you can keep our little ones safe:

  • Prevent falls: 50% of brain injuries among kids are due to falls. Install safety gates at the top and bottom of all stairs, install window guards and ensure children wear properly fitted protective gear.
  • Practice safe sleep: The ABCs of safe sleep are: Making sure babies are always sleeping Alone on their Back and in a Crib.
  • Keep kids lead-free: Exposure to lead can seriously harm a child’s health can make it hard for children to learn, pay attention and behave.
