Children can be read to no matter how young they are—whether it’s reading aloud, playing spelling games, creating stories, designing a reading challenge, or exploring new books— literacy is a part of every day.
Our friends at the United Way San Diego love reading too! That’s why we’ve partnered with them this National Reading Month to share some ways to find opportunities for reading out loud with your little ones:
- Rhyme together: Take turns adding a line and keep the rhythm going. It’s a fun way to build vocabulary, creativity, and connection:
I like it when we walk together
We can talk about the weather
We can name the things we see
I like it when it’s you and me!
- Discover together: Sharing stories creates special moments and builds lifelong readers. Whether it’s a beloved bedtime story, a silly picture book, or an adventure that sparks their imagination, find books that can bring your family together.
- Learn together: Babies and toddlers are learning to match words with different things in their world. Labeling at every opportunity—like pointing and looking at an object when describing them—helps them learn new words and understand their meaning.
