Each year around 3,300 children under the age of five are injured from falling out a window.

As little ones start to crawl and toddle through their spaces, it’s vital to keep our homes as a safe space for exploration.

Follow these tips to keep your windows safe:

  • Install window guards and stops. Unlike screens, which are not meant to hold the weight of a child, window guards are designed to prevent children from falling out of windows. Parents and caregivers can also install window stops to ensure their windows do not open above a set height.
  • Close windows after use. Keep windows closed and securely locked when they are not in use. If your windows can open from the top and the bottom, opt for keeping the top portion open to prevent falls.
  • Move furniture away from windows. Keep your little ones from climbing out the window by removing chairs and other furniture away from windows.

A best practice to minimize the risk of your little one from falling out a window is to ensure that you do not leave them in a room on their own to explore.

If your child does fall out the window, do not move them if they appear to be seriously injured. Call 911 and let a trained medical professional move the child. For more information visit, https://www.nsc.org/community-safety/safety-topics/child-safety/window-safety
