The theme for this year’s Breastfeeding Awareness Month is “Nourish, Sustain, Thrive,” and aims to promote the importance of lactation support, recognize the work organizations are doing to support new parents and families, and highlight advocacy efforts.
The nutrition from breastmilk can help babies physical and cognitive development. It is also full of antibodies, enzymes, bioactive factors, and nutrients that builds immunity and protection against devastating disease.
Sometimes mothers of the smallest infants can struggle to produce or express enough milk for their baby due to factors like stress, mother-infant separation, and birth trauma.
UC Health Milk Bank provides high quality pasteurized donor milk to these families and NICU’s in the San Diego region, giving them life-sustaining nutrition to thrive. We are proud to partner with them this month to promote their organization and share their resources and information among our networks.
We will also be celebrating and observing the following weeks this month:
- August 1-7: World Breastfeeding Week
- August 8-14: Indigenous Milk Medicine Week
- August 15-21: Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week
- August 25-31: Black Breastfeeding Week
- September 5-11: Semana de La Lactancia Latina
