September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), children with obesity are at a higher risk for asthma, sleep apnea, bone and joint problems, type 2 diabetes, and risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure compared to children with healthy weight. Unfortunately, one in five children in the US have obesity.

The good news: there are many ways to address obesity through adopting active, healthy habits.

That’s why this month, we’re partnering with our friends at the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative (SDCOI) to share some essential healthy habits from their refreshed evidence-based 5210+ campaign:

5: Fuel your body with 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day

2: Limit recreational screen time to 2 hours or less for healthier minds and bodies

1: Encourage 1 hour or more of physical activity to build strong bodies and minds

0: Promote water over sugary drinks for better overall health

*NEW* Sleep! Prioritize 8-14 hours of sleep for growing bodies and minds.
