First 5 San Diego has been selected to receive the 2014 Achievement Award by the National Association of Counties (NACo) for the First 5 San Diego Quality Preschool Initiative (QPI). The annual Achievement Award Program recognizes outstanding programs for their innovation to modernize county government.

QPI, coordinated by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), ensures access to a high-quality preschool experience at no cost to families in 17 targeted high-need communities throughout San Diego County.  The program promotes quality standards for the delivery of early childhood education services and learning environments, based on nationally recognized best practices.  Now starting its third year, the program leverages state and federal funds and has served over 12,000 preschool-aged (3-5 years) children per year in 43 agencies at 207 sites and 638 classrooms.  Children attending QPI preschool programs made statistically significant gains.  Other results include an increase in advanced education of teachers, increased parent engagement, and the use of advanced technology in the classrooms. The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce the school readiness gap in selected high-need communities and improve school achievement.
