A Smart Start to the New School Year
This time of year can be stressful for parents and kids, especially if you have a new preschooler or kindergartner, but it doesn’t have to be. There are some simple steps you can take to plan for the year ahead, before the school bells and alarm clocks start sounding off:
- De-Stress Your Mornings. Ease into the school-year schedule by getting a routine down. Be firm on a school-year bedtime, especially late sleepers who have a harder time waking up in the morning. Same goes for meal times. Children need to adapt new mealtimes to adjust to school time meal and snack time schedules.
- Get organized. Create a central calendar. Build your calendar by filling in the dates that you are already aware of like back to school nights and holidays. Also include after school activities, child care arrangements and transportation needs. Establish a getting ready the night before policy, including getting book bags packed, lunches made, and clothes picked out for the next day.
- Plan Your Meals. Meal planning in advance will help you stick to nutritional meals for the whole family throughout the school year. Pack lunches the night before to give you enough time to include healthy items. Grocery shopping and planning the week or weekend before, helps when you need to get dinner ready in a rush. Having additional healthy options stored in your freezer for last minute meals, helps eliminate the need for fast food or unhealthy meals.
Now that you have a plan, you’re ready to swing into the new school year.
