First 5 High Five – Home Start
Home Start is non-profit child abuse prevention and treatment agency funded in part by the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency and First 5 San Diego. The program aims to prevent child abuse by addressing conditions that contribute to risky and abusive situations such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, unemployment and unsafe neighborhoods.
Recently, Home Start was featured on County News Center, sharing the story of Deann Todd, a mother of five children ages 1 through 11 in need of housing assistance while getting her life back on track.
Todd was in the midst of turning things around for her struggling family when an unexpected twist in a relationship pushed her a few steps backwards and threatened everything she had worked for. Before she knew it, she found herself unemployed and her family left without a home.
A relative told her about Home Start and as soon as she entered the program, her life began to change for the better. The program helped her to secure a place and save enough money for necessities and transportation. She was able to find a full-time job and after getting settled, her children’s grades in school immediately improved.
