First 5 San Diego Partners with K to College Dental Kit Initiative
First 5 San Diego is pleased to partner with K to College—an organization that offers under–resourced students with grade-appropriate school supply kits—for their Dental Kit Initiative. First 5 San Diego will provide basic oral healthcare necessities – a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss – to preschool students in San Diego County. The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) will be distributing the dental kits to local school districts.
Approximately one-third of children in San Diego County enter Kindergarten with dental problems. Left untreated, dental disease can affect a child’s sleep patterns, cause problems with speech and language development, and impair psychological well-being and social interaction. In addition, children with poor dental health are more likely to miss school and have lower academic performance.
The mission of K to College is “to promote equal access to education by ensuring every student has the resources and tools to learn from kindergarten to college.” Targeting public school students identified as homeless under the U.S. McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and other children enrolled in the subsidized meal program, K to College partners directly with school districts to reach those most in need.
