First 5 San Diego and San Diego County Library Launch New Discovery Zones

On May 28, 2014, families attended Toddler Storytime at the Discovery Zone funded by First 5 San Diego at the Vista Branch Library.

First 5 San Diego and the San Diego County Library held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Vista Branch Library in Vista, Calif. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, unveiling the first completed Discovery Zone.  Executive Director Kim Medeiros joined with Supervisor Bill Horn and San Diego County Library Director José Aponte as part of a larger celebration for the completion of the Vista Library Refresh Project.

The San Diego County Library installed early-literacy Discovery Zones, funded by First 5 San Diego, in five San Diego County branch libraries – El Cajon, Imperial Beach, San Marcos, Spring Valley, and Vista.

Each branch has a customized set of early-literacy equipment designed to engage children ages 0 through 5 and their caregivers by talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing.  Installations include a Roll-A-Song activity to encourage singing, an alphabet tracing table to encourage writing, Lego and/or magnet walls to encourage playing, talking, writing, and math, a play house and play structure to encourage play and talking, and plenty of books for early readers and comfortable reading areas.

“Early literacy development is closely linked to a child’s earliest experiences with books and interactive play with parents and caregivers,” said Kim Medeiros, executive director of First 5 San Diego. “We’re excited to give families a place for such positive experiences.”

The San Diego County Library is also installing Discovery Zones in four other branches:  Borrego Springs, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, and Valley Center.
