First 5 High Five: Over Half a Million New Parents Kits Distributed
If you’ve received prenatal care and/or had a baby at a local hospital in the last decade, you may recall receiving a box packed with information for first-time parents – from a practical guide to the first five years to a health handbook, child safety and more. Since 2002, First 5 San Diego has distributed the Kit for New Parents (Kit) to San Diego families countywide and recently surpassed the 500,000 distribution mark to new and expectant parents.
Annually, First 5 San Diego distributes 38,000 kits in San Diego County. The award-winning Kit, developed by First 5 California, includes an educational DVD, Advice for New Parents reference book, What to Do When Your Child Gets Sick book, and Puppy and Friends touch-and-feel board book. First 5 San Diego has included customized items over the years such as a pocket-sized developmental milestones guide, bookmark, growth chart, and a Daddy’s Tool Bag DVD.
The Kit has a retail value of $75 but is provided by First 5 San Diego at no cost through a network of 600 local partner organizations, coordinated by UCSD Regional Perinatal Center, which include birthing hospitals, County and City libraries, family resource centers, prenatal programs, childcare programs, home visitation programs, pediatric offices, health clinics, and community events.
Kits are available in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. To order your free Kit, call 1-888-5 FIRST 5.
