SAN DIEGO – (Nov. 13, 2013) – First 5 San Diego along with The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and Wells Fargo will be at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego on Nov. 18 at 10:00 a.m. to officially kickoff the Holiday Food Drive 2013. The joint effort aims to help provide meals for San Diego County’s 462,000 people living in poverty—of which 137,000 are children—during the holiday season.
“We are proud to be a part of the San Diego Food Bank’s Holiday Food Drive 2013,” said Supervisor Ron Roberts, Chair of the First 5 Commission. “This is an important time to remember that hunger impacts every community, across all racial and gender categories and age groups. We urge residents to support San Diego’s youngest children affected by their families’ difficult economic situation.”
First 5 San Diego’s Executive Director Kim Medeiros, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts and The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank President and CEO James Floros will be present along with numerous other business and community leaders to recognize and announce efforts to support the Holiday Food Drive 2013.
“We know that poverty can often lead to missed meals for children, and thereafter, poor academic performance and health problems,” said Medeiros. “Through this partnership, we are achieving our vision that all children ages 0 to 5 are healthy and enter school able to succeed.”
Donations can be made by dropping off nonperishable food items in clearly marked red barrels at any Vons or Stater Bros. supermarkets throughout San Diego County or directly to the Food Bank warehouse at 9850 Distribution Ave. in San Diego between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also make a secure online donation at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.
Food collected from the Holiday Food Drive 2013 will be distributed to people in need through 330 partner charities including Stand Up For Kids, Family Care Foundation, Mira Mesa Christian Pre-School and Klassic Kids, which focus on young children and families.
