San Diego Leaders Gather for a Sneak Peak of Raising of America Documentary
More than 300 San Diego community members including educators, early childhood advocates, business colleagues, and other leaders gathered at the San Diego Central Library for a sneak preview of the PBS documentary “The Raising of America: Early Childhood and the Future of our Nation”. The documentary illustrates how a strong start for all kids leads not only to better individual life course outcomes, but also to a healthier, safer, better, educated, more prosperous and equitable nation. The video is scheduled to be released in 2015.
The screening was among 30 similar events nationwide, organized by the League of Women Voters of San Diego along with the American Academy of Pediatrics – California Chapter 3 (AAP-CA3), YMCA Childcare Resource Service, San Diego County Child Care and Development Planning Council, and Ninth District PTA. First 5 San Diego was among the key sponsors, providing each attendee a complimentary copy of “For Our Babies: Ending the Invisible Neglect of America’s Infants,” the book of which the film is based upon. Other key sponsors included the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Public Library, Reach Out and Read San Diego, Early Edge California, South Bay Community Services, and Chula Vista Promise Neighborhood.
A moderated panel discussion after the film included Congresswoman Susan A. Davis, 53rd Congressional District, California, U.S. House of Representatives; Suzanne Flint, Library Programs Consultant, California State Library; Pradeep Gidwani, M.D., M.P.H. of AAP-CA3; and Teresa Wolownik, Senior Director of Benefits and Health Services, Qualcomm.
