Whether you’re a first time parent or a seasoned veteran, raising a young child has its rewards – and quite frankly, challenges. One thing I know is that we as parents all want what is best for our children and will do everything we can to help them lead successful lives. To help parents get their children off to a happy, healthy start in life, First 5 San Diego was excited to present the inaugural Parent Summit 2014.
The event, themed “A Parent is a Child’s First and Best Teacher,” held on Saturday morning, October 25, 2014 at Liberty Station, gave parents and caregivers the chance to discover new parenting tools and techniques through a variety of workshops and demonstrations, covering topics such as behavior and temperament, bonding with your child, talking, reading and singing to your child, preparing your child for preschool, healthy eating, exercise, being a foster and adoptive parent, and more.
We kicked off the event by unveiling the First 5 San Diego Parent Portal, an online resource featuring parenting tips and resources to assist San Diego parents and caregivers of children ages 0 through 5. The keynote speech by parenting expert Fred Becker of The Becker Institute and member of the First 5 Commission of San Diego’s Technical Professional Advisory Committee highlighted the importance of guiding children in laying a solid foundation for the rest of their lives. Remarks by Supervisor Greg Cox, Chairman of the First 5 Commission, further instilled First 5 San Diego’s mission to promote the vital importance of the first five years of life to the well-being of children, families and society.
A special thanks to everyone who made this event a success! I want to especially thank Supervisor Cox for his support as the Parent Summit allowed First 5 San Diego to further strengthen existing ties in the community and develop new relationships with San Diego families. I also want to thank him for his exceptional leadership this past year. Under his leadership, First 5 San Diego has found success in supporting San Diego families during FY 2014-15 by enrolling 8,398 children and 3,014 pregnant women in health insurance, provided high-quality preschool to 13,687 children and sponsored or participated in community events that reached nearly 141,000 families. First 5 San Diego already serves one out of every four children ages 0 through 5 in San Diego.
We continue to see the benefit of offering these valuable resources to parents in San Diego. We’ll use this momentum to achieve the Live Well San Diego vision and further enrich the lives of San Diego’s youngest residents.
