First 5 San Diego Joins South Bay Family YMCA Healthy Kids Day, Nation’s Largest Event
Each year, more than 1,900 YMCAs celebrate Healthy Kids Day, a national initiative to improve the health and well-being of children. On April 26, 2014, First 5 San Diego was excited to participate in the largest YMCA Healthy Kids Day event in the nation, hosted by the South Bay Family YMCA at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista, California. First 5 San Diego was a sponsor of the event, in which 94 cents of every dollar went back into programs and services for local South Bay families in need.
Executive Director Kim Medeiros joined the event kick-off during the opening ceremony, emceed by Joe Little from 10 News. Other guests included Assemblywoman Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D ., Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox, Chula Vista Deputy Mayor Pat Aguilar, Chula Vista Councilmember Mary Salas, and Miss California Staci Ortiz-Davis.
More than 135 businesses and organizations, including First 5 San Diego, provided free activities and information to the community. Guests enjoyed Family Zumba, healthy demonstrations, fitness activities by San Diego Padres FriarFit, and two stages packed full of performances all day.
