On March 20, 2014, First 5 San Diego was among the nominees recognized for their commitment to helping children live well at the 2014 STARS Awards Breakfast event at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation in San Diego, Calif. The Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council hosted the annual event to celebrate April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and honor advocates for foster youth.
The event featured keynote speaker Antwone Fisher, former foster youth, author of “Finding Fish” and the award winning movie “Antwon Fisher”. He spoke about his experience in the foster system and the child abuse that he endured. He also spoke about how he overcame his obstacles and became successful in life.
