First 5 Leaders, Legislators Celebrate 15 Years
On March 19, 2014, First 5 Commissioners and leaders from counties across the state joined with Speaker of the Assembly John A. Pérez at the State Capitol to recognize First 5’s accomplishments over the past 15 years and goals for the future.
Executive Director Kim Medeiros and Community Engagement Manager Naomi Chavez were among the representatives who attended the 15th Anniversary Reception, meeting with elected officials to reinforce the importance of investing in the early years.
Senator Marty Block, who represents District 39 (San Diego, Coronado, Del Mar, and Solana Beach), joined nearly a dozen legislators and Speaker Pérez at the reception, thanking First 5 for its dedicated efforts. Speaker Pérez recognized in particular the leadership shown by First 5 in 2010 to ensure continued funding for CalWorks Stage 3 Child Care.
“Consider that a 3-year-old who benefited from this program 15 years ago is an adult today. They’re old enough to work or to attend college and are beginning to provide incredible returns on the investment to our state,” said Perez. “With what we’ve learned, it’s remarkable now to think how effective these programs will be in the next 15 years.”
