First 5 San Diego Launches New Targeted Home Visiting Initiative
A child’s health and development depends largely on the family and home environment. Studies show that quality parent education and support beginning prenatally through the child’s early years can prevent child abuse and neglect and reduce health, development and learning problems.
That’s why First 5 San Diego is excited to introduce First 5 First Steps. The new targeted home visiting initiative provides home visitation services countywide for expectant parents and parents of newborns to specific target population families (teens, military, immigrants, refugees, and low-income households) using two evidence-based home visiting models, Healthy Families America (HFA) model and the Parents as Teachers (PAT) curriculum. Services to families began October 14, 2013 in all County regions.
Staff from First 5 San Diego and the American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 3 was invited by HFA National to be the only home visiting program presenting information at the HFA State Leadership Conference. The presentation focused on First 5 First Steps’ implementation process on trauma informed principles in staff training, practice, program structure, and planning. The workshop explored concrete ways leaders can promote and encourage a healthy working environment through policy, procedure and practice that protects and nurtures staff at all levels of the program.
