As we enter 2014, I would like to welcome Supervisor Greg Cox as the new Chair of the Commission. This year will be Supervisor Cox’s third term after serving in 2003 and 2008. He played a key role in the Commission’s investments in capital projects to help build the infrastructure for early childhood development in the county. He also played a key role in  establishing the Commission’s Healthcare Access (HCA) program, which helps to enroll pregnant women and children in health insurance. I’m looking forward to working with Supervisor Cox in the upcoming year.

One of the exciting projects we have to look forward to is our new targeted home visiting initiative, First 5 First Steps. This initiative provides intensive home visitation services to specific target populations using evidence-based service delivery models.

We are in the second fiscal year of the First 5 San Diego Quality Preschool Initiative (QPI) and will continue to expand high quality preschool services in San Diego County. By the end of June, QPI anticipates serving more than 12,000 three and four-year-olds with a high quality early learning experience.

Also, First 5 San Diego is getting social! If you haven’t already, join us on Facebook @First5SanDiego, and follow us on Twitter @First5SD and Instagram @First5SanDiego. Finally, we’re excited to announce the launch of our new website, with a new fresh look!  The site was made to be easier to navigate.  It also features live feeds from our Facebook page.  We hope you take some time to explore!

Cheers to a happy new year!

Sincerely,

Kim Medeiros
