Last November and December, First 5 San Diego partnered with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank for Holiday Food Drive 2014, along with VONS, Wells Fargo, and Fox 5 San Diego.  The annual food drive aims to help provide meals for San Diego County’s 462,000 people living in poverty–of which 137,000 are children–during the holiday season.  Food collected from the Holiday Food Drive was distributed to people in need through 330 partner charities including Stand Up for Kids, Family Care Foundation, Mira Mesa Christian Preschool, and Klassic Kids, which focus on young children and families.

This is the second year in a row First 5 San Diego has partnered with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank for their annual holiday food drive.  As a result, the two entities have expanded its partnership to provide low-income pregnant women and families with children ages 0 through 5 with a monthly food package.  The program, called “Good Start for Women + Children”, addresses the nutrition-related challenges of mothers and young children during their family’s difficult economic situation – missed meals and hunger which can result in poor school performance and illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity.  The program ends in June 2015.  To find out if you qualify and for more information, call 1-888-5 FIRST 5 (1-888-534-7785).
