The Kids First Fair is held each year at Camp Pendleton in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Department of Defense Military Child Month. First 5 San Diego participated in the 17th annual event.

More than 5,000 people attended the event and enjoyed live music, entertainment, food, games, and community resources for children. First 5 San Diego partnered with First 5 California’s Hands on Health Exhibit to educate parents about First 5 services and the importance of nutrition and physical activity. First 5 San Diego gave children a free nutrition portion plate to help them eat healthy at every meal.

“Military families are an important part of San Diego communities,” said First 5 San Diego Chair Supervisor Bill Horn. “Many of the families are here in San Diego away from their extended families and support system.

“First 5 San Diego helps provide San Diego’s youngest children with essential services including preschool, developmental screenings, and family support. Our military families have a great need for services and often don’t know where to turn to and First 5 San Diego helps fill that gap.”

First 5 promotes the vital importance of the first 5 years of life to the well-being of children, families and society. First 5 San Diego staff can often be found at various community events promoting health, learning, and families.

“Events like the Kids First Fair at Camp Pendleton provide an opportunity to hear first-hand the needs of our military families with young children,” said Kim Medeiros, First 5 San Diego Executive Director. “We were able to provide information on exercise, health and safety, and First 5 San Diego services.

“It also supports, Live Well, San Diego! The County’s 10 year plan to achieve the vision for healthy, safe, and thriving communities.”
